Religious Education
Intent
At Kings Hill School and Nursery we believe that it is important for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. The aim of Religious Education in our school is:-
- To help children to acquire and develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in Great Britain.
- Develop their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures.
- Develop the ability to make reasoned and informed judgements about religious and moral issues and enhance their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
Implementation
We use the Kent Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education (2017-2022) as the basis for our curriculum.
- We explore the “big questions” about life and find out what other people believe and what difference this makes to how they live. Pupils can then begin to make sense of religion and reflect on their own ideas and ways of living.
- We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world, and to reflect on and voice their own beliefs, values and experiences. It is essential that RE enables pupils to confidently share their own viewpoints without embarrassment or ridicule.
- A sequential curriculum which allow pupils to gain deep knowledge of Religious Education over time allowing progression and mastery.
- Opportunity for class and assembly discussions which enable pupils to express their own views.
- Many children in Kent come from religious backgrounds but others have no attachment to religious beliefs and practices. The RE curriculum is broad and balanced to reflect this. Christianity and other principal religions represented in Great Britain (Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism along with Humanism) are studied across the key stages. Children also study how religions relate to each other, recognising both similarities and differences within and between religions.
- Our Religious Education curriculum is enhanced further with trips to places of worship in our local area and visits from religious speakers.
Impact
Our Religious Education curriculum is high quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression.
In addition, we measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes.
- Enjoyment of the subject demonstrated by “Pupil Voice” sessions.
- The confidence of children to question and share their ideas about “big questions”.

Tuesday 3 May 2022 Trip to Rochester Cathedral Last week Year 2 went on a school trip to visit Rochester Cathedral. The day started with a morning prayer and the children were able to look at the beautiful surroundings. The children then took part in a shape workshop where they were able to consolidate their knowledge by identifying a range of shapes around the cathedral and creating their own tessellations. After impressing the staff greatly with their knowledge, the children then studied different stories in the stained-glass windows. They enjoyed listening to the story of 'The 3 Trees' and began to think about the moral of the tale. The children then designed their own window, thinking about their dreams and ambitions. After lunch, the children explored the outside of the cathedral and looked at the structure and design thoroughly. They enjoyed using their sketching skills to draw the Cathedral, working hard to include lots of the detail. Friday 28 January 2022 World Religion Day Over the last few weeks we have celebrated World Religion Day in school. Firstly we had an assembly to raise awareness of the different religions in the world. Children also learnt about the meaning of tolerance and respect of all faiths.
