Intent

At Kings Hill School we implement a high-quality Art, Craft and Design curriculum that:

• Provides an imaginative and innovative curriculum which will foster enthusiasm amongst all children.
• Provides children with equal opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media, materials and tools.
• Exposes children to a broad selection of artists, cultures, periods and movements.
• Empowers resilient learners to take risk and explore in an environment that encourages meaningful and continuous reflection.
• Expresses children’s individual interests, thoughts and ideas whilst developing socially, morally, spiritually and culturally.

Implementation

The implementation of Art, Craft and Design is an in housed personalised scheme created by the art specialist teacher which is regularly assessed and developed to ensure progression throughout the school.

Areas taught by the art specialist include:

• Textiles
• Batik
• Mixed media
• Painting
• Drawing
• Sculpture
• Digital art

Within these areas the children develop a wide range of ideas and creative techniques, using various materials and tools. The work of famous local, national and international artists are explored to enhance the children’s awareness of knowledge. Children are introduced to different movements in art and time to allow them to gain a historical perspective. They also use popular culture around the world and throughout time as a discussion point and stimuli to inspire their own craft. Children consider the significance art can play in representing and celebrating religious beliefs.

Art is used as a tool to develop individuality and resilience. Children are encouraged to consistently stop, critically evaluate and reflect upon their own work and that of others. At Kings Hill School our Art, Craft and Design lessons are planned and delivered to promote an environment that allows children to be subjective, take risks and explore their own creative thoughts and ideas. Children are exposed to broad vocabulary which is used within discussion and written form.

As well as specialist taught lessons, we provide children with the opportunity to progress their skills and knowledge further by being part of an Art, Craft and Design committee. The committee allows the children to refine their craft and play a part in the decision making process of raising the profile of art within the school.

Impact

Throughout the school Art, Craft and Design is documented through portfolios, photography and sketchpads. EYFS and KS1 use portfolios and KS2 use both sketchpads and portfolios for larger pieces of work. These are kept as they progress throughout the school.

The Art Specialist teacher uses observations and questioning as an indication to assess whether the children are meeting the expected standard for their age. This information is also recorded and kept as an indication to support future planning and the development of the art scheme.

We also encourage the children to self and peer reflect by giving constructive criticism within the lessons. When assessing teachers and children will consider vocabulary and the use of skills and knowledge.

Art News

• Thursday 28 September 2023 Sculpture Year 4 have been looking at sculpture and nature this term. They explored the work of Andy Goldsworthy and even had a go at creating outdoor sculptures with nature themselves. This week they have been busy looking at the work of William Morris and Cath Kidston, thinking about how nature inspires their work.
• Tuesday 10 May 2022 Inspired by Van Gough Year 4 have begun their art topic, painting in the Van Gogh style. This week the children were introduced to the artist and his work. They then looked at different paintings and researched his painting and drawing techniques. Finally, year 4 began to try out their own artistic skills in this style
• Thursday 10 February 2022 Studying Artists in Year 1 Year 1 have been looking at the artist Georgia O'Keefe over the last two weeks thinking about closed and open compositions. They have used their knowledge of line and colour to create their very own Georgia O'Keefe inspired pictures. Children have enjoyed using a combination of oil pastels and inks.
• Thursday 10 February 2022 Art in EYFS Reception have continued their journey into mark making over the last two weeks. Children have explored selecting and combining different mediums to create controlled focused marks.
