Keeping Children Safe in education

Kings Hill School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all its pupils. Strict child protection and recruitment procedures operate and all appointments are subject to satisfactory references and enhanced checks from the Disclosure and Barring Service.

There have been important updates to the safeguarding duties for schools, including the statutory duty to report HBV, CSE and PREVENT.

If an adult has a concern about any aspect of the welfare or well-being of a child they should inform a Designated Safeguarding Lead and record it as a concern.

Everyone should listen; a child will disclose to a person who they trust. As a staff team we are confident in recognising, referring, responding and recording safeguarding incidents.

Kings Hill School has adopted the definition of the term 'Safeguarding' used in the Children Act 2004.

In summary this is:

  • protecting children from maltreatment;
  • preventing impairment of children's health or development;
  • ensuring that children are growing up in circumstances consistent with the provision of safe and effective care; and
  • undertaking that role so as to enable those children to have optimum life chances and to enter adulthood successfully.

 Kings Hill School’s safeguarding arrangements cover all aspects of life at school, in particular addressing these issues:

  • health and safety;
  • bullying;
  • other harassment and discrimination, including racism;
  • physical intervention;
  • meeting the needs of pupils with medical conditions;
  • behaviour
  • off-site visits;
  • intimate care;
  • online safety;
  • physical security of the school site;
  • recruitment and vetting of staff and visitors to the school site.

Prevent Duty

From July 2015, schools have a specific duty to safeguard young people from being drawn into terrorism – this duty is known as the Prevent Duty.

Prevent is a government strategy designed to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorist or extremist causes. This means we have a responsibility to protect children from extremist and violent views.

Honour Based Violence

Forced Marriage

A Forced Marriage (FM) is a marriage conducted without the valid consent of one or both parties and where duress is a factor. FM is now a specific offence under s121 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 and comes into force on 16 June 2014.

Female Genital Mutilation

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is illegal in England and Wales under the FGM Act 2003 ("the 2003 Act"). It is a form of child abuse and violence against women. FGM comprises all procedures involving partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.

Section 5B of the 2003 Act 1 introduces a mandatory reporting duty which requires regulated health and social care professionals and teachers in England and Wales to report 'known' cases of FGM in under 18s which they identify in the course of their professional work to the police.

Breast Ironing

Much like FGM, Breast Ironing is a harmful cultural practice and is child abuse.  Professionals working with children and young people must be able to identify the signs and symptoms of girls who are at risk of or have undergone breast ironing. Similarly to FGM, breast ironing is classified as physical abuse therefore professionals must follow their Local Safeguarding Children's Board Procedures.

CSE

Child Sexual Exploitation is where young people under 18 are encouraged, trapped, forced or coerced into a sexual relationship or situation by an adult. It often involves the young person being offered something in return for performing sexual acts such as drugs, alcohol, cigarettes, gifts, money, food, accommodation or affection. CSE is a form of abuse.
